The Inventortells the story of the insatiably curious and headstrong inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci (Stephen Fry) as he leaves Italy to join the French court where he can freely experiment, invent flying contraptions and incredible machines, and study the human body. Joined in his adventure by the audacious Princess Marguerite (Daisy Ridley), Leonardo attempts to uncover the answer to the ultimate question: “What is the meaning of life?"
This imaginative and family-friendly feature about the life of Leonardo da Vinci is written and directed by Oscar nominee Jim Capobianco, the screenwriter behind beloved Pixar outingRatatouille, and is co-directed by Pierre-Luc Granjon with music composed by Alex Mandel, ofBravefame.

The Inventor Tells the Story of a ‘True Superhero’
Director Jim Capobianco has revealed why he felt compelled to tell the story of da Vinci, and why it’s a project he has wanted to make for some time. “The Inventorwas sparked by the idea that Leonardo da Vinci probably had bad days as well as good,” he said. The director continued:
“He banged his knee, jumped for joy, whispered softly, wept, got frustrated, and felt anger. He was human after all. I began to see him not as the sage as always depicted, or the other extreme — the scatterbrain who invents crazy contraptions — but as a real person struck with ideas beyond the technical, intellectual, and the societal capabilities of his time.”
Describing da Vinci as a “true superhero,” Capobianco adds, “Although Leonardo was probably the smartest guy in the room, he was likely also the loneliest. It was the Renaissance era. It was a time when it was widely believed metal could be turned into gold, the Earth was considered the center of the universe, and our planet was flat. Few people understood his ideas. It was from these musings that I created the animated shortLeonardoin 2009, and years later, I still felt compelled to explore his world more deeply withThe Inventor.”
Blue Fox Entertainment will be releasingThe Inventorexclusively in theaters nationwide in on August 24, 2025.
