With all the exciting news and reveals coming out of Gamescom for high-profile projects likePragmataandHollow Knight: Silksong,it can be easy to overlook the equally awesome news for some of the more niche releases coming later this year. One of these is Microids’Syberia - Remasteredwhich has at last gotten a final release date of November 6.

To mark the announcement, the publisher has released a new trailer showing just how dramatic the changes are between the 2002 original and the new version it’ll soon be delivering. Make sure to take a minute and check it out below. Also, a VR version will be coming to the Quest 3 on November 13. Syberia Remastered will be a fully digital release on all supported platforms, but fans living in the UK will have a chance to snag themselves a limited physical edition if they so desire.

Syberia Remastered - Mammoth Building

The same adventure, but in a greatly expanded world.

With Syberia Remastered, developers Virtuallyz and Microids Studio Paris appear to have largely retained the atmosphere of the original while greatly expanding the player’s ability to explore its world. As seen above, Syberia operated in a manner similar to the likes of Final Fantasy VII, utilizing fixed camera angles and largely pre-rendered environments. In this version, each area appears to be a fully realized space and offers a camera that smoothly follows the player as they explore. It’s a dramatic difference for a remaster, on a level closer to something likelast year’s Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill 2 is, of course, a full remake rather than a remaster, but it too was made with preserving the spirit of the original in mind. So, like Syberia Remastered, it’s different but not to the point where it’s unrecognizable.

The developers likely could have gone further if they’d wanted, but according to all the material released so far, preserving the narrative and emotional depth of original creator Benoît Sokal’s work was a top priority. Such an attitude has apparently been the case with past efforts by Microid to bring back other classic titles, such as the remake of Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy.

For those unfamiliar with the world and story of Syberia, it takes place in an alternate history wherein technology progressed via clockwork rather than through steam power and the other developments found in the real world. It follows one Kate Walker, an American lawyer sent by her firm to find the eccentric Hans Voralberg, who has himself gone on a journey to an unknown land in hopes of finding the last living mammoth.

Kate just needs him to sign off on some paperwork related to a corporate takeover of Hans’ family-owned automaton factory, but as one might imagine, it turns out to be a much bigger job than she bargained for, taking her all across the continent and through plenty of puzzles in pursuit. Those who want to check it out right now can still pick up the originalon Steam, but with this updated version only a couple of months away now, why not wait a bit, yeah?
