Summary

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #50!After 60 years of facing his arch nemesis (in one form or another),Spider-Manhas finally figured out how to defeat the Green Goblin, with an all-new weapon of Spidey’s own design. This is the ultimate game-changer for Spider-Man, as it doesn’t just work on Norman Osborn, but presumably everyone who’s been infected with the maddening Goblin Gas - and perhaps even himself.

InThe Amazing Spider-Man#50 by Zeb Wells and Ed McGuinness, Peter Parker discovers thatNorman Osborn has once again become the Green Goblin. After Sin Eater purged the Goblin persona from Osborn’s psyche, the businessman gave up the supervillain life. In fact,Norman even became the superhero Gold Goblinin an effort to make up for the evil he’d done as the Green Goblin. However, after Norman took his sin back into his body (as he didn’t want them to plague someone else), he reverted to Green Goblin - and Spider-Man was prepared.

While Spider-Man acted stunned by the realization that Norman Osborn was once again the Green Goblin, he confirms while fighting him that he never trusted Norman. Indeed, Peter only accepted his current position at Oscorp to keep an eye on Norman for that very reason. And now, all of Peter’s anxieties had come to fruition, and he was more than ready. After luring Green Goblin into his personal lab within Oscorp, Spider-Man blasts the Green Goblin with a gas that robs him of his superhuman strength, which Peter created by reverse-engineering the original Goblin Gas itself.

Doctor Octopus Debuts New Power, Making Him Spider-Man’s Most Spine-Tingling Villain

Spider-Man’s Doctor Octopus just debuted an all-new power that not only makes him the most dangerous he’s ever been, but also the absolute creepiest.

Spider-Man & Green Goblin Have Created the Perfect ‘Kryptonite’ for the Other

While it’s exciting that Spider-Man has finally found a way to neutralize the Green Goblin’s strength after 60 years of fighting him (given that the Green Goblin debuted in 1964), this victory is a bit better sweet, as the Green Goblin did the same thing to Spidey - and Gobby did it first.

Earlier in this very issue, the Green Goblin (right after the big reveal that Norman was evil again) hit Spider-Man with a gas bomb that took away Peter’s strength, his spider-sense, and his wall-crawling ability. When Spider-Man effectively did the same to Gobby, he evened the odds, but only after he suffered the ‘kryptonite’ Green Goblin made for him first.

Spider-Man Might Have to Use His & Green Goblin’s ‘Kryptonite Gas’ on Himself

After Spider-Man and Green Goblin de-powered each other, the Green Goblin launched his ‘finisher move’ that won the villain the fight. The Green Goblin turned Spider-Man into a new ‘Goblin’ villain himself, who will come to be known as Spider-Goblin. This came as a result of the Goblin Gas and the fact that Peter previously housed Norman Osborn’s sins in his own psyche, leaving him vulnerable to corruption. And now, the only way to take him down may be by using the weapon Spider-Man himself created to take down Green Goblin - perhaps mixed with the gas Green Goblin created to de-power Spider-Man.

Given that Spider-Man’s anti-Green Goblin weapon is derived from reverse-engineering the Goblin Gas, it stands to reason that it would work on any ‘Goblin Villain’. This is great news for Spider-Man moving forward, as there never seems to be no shortage of those in his rogue’s gallery. However, in a fun twist, it may also be the key to his own villainous downfall, asSpider-Manhas become a ‘Goblin Villain’ himself just as he created a game-changing new weapon that’s been 60 years in the making.
