Marvel Rivals has been filled to the brim with new content ever since it first launched back in December of last year. The latest addition is an entirely new game mode called Clone Rumble. If the name doesn’t tell you enough as is, Clone Rumble allows players from each team to play any two chosen heroes with no upper limit. That means you could possibly have up to twelve Spider-Men in one lobby or reenact Civil War with six Iron Men versus six Captain Americas. This guarantees fun and hectic matches, depending on the heroes available.

Not Everyone Is Ready To Rumble

While the event does promote “limitless possibilities,” the developers enforced character bans to prevent undesirable matches. This includes five of the eight strategists, as well as a singular vanguard. For the most part, it’s easy to see why some of the characters aren’t allowed in the event. In the case of Luna Snow, Cloak & Dagger and The Invisible Woman, all three have powerful defensive ultimates that focus on keeping the team alive.Luna’s ultimate, for example, creates a large healing circle that lets her be nearly immortal for twelve seconds. Multiply that by twelve for each player in one game and you’ll have a long match ahead of you.

Two other strategists, Adam Warlock and Loki, are also banned. Adam Warlock can resurrect his entire team at low health, which would have similar issues in an All-Adam lobby. Some speculate that Loki is banned because of his innate ability to create two of his own clones, ironically enough. With Rivals’s optimization issues on PC, having 36 Lokis active all at once might be too much for the game to handle. There would also be the possible scenario where if Loki was the only chosen hero, he would have no ultimates to copy – which wouldn’t have been very exciting. Notably, the hero Mantis is still allowed in the event. Despite having a similar defensive ultimate, Mantis' has a much shorter duration and is still easier to eliminate when activated.

DC comic characters including Batman, Black Canary, Wonder Woman, and Flash

Stranger Things Have Happened

Dr. Strange is the only vanguard not allowed in the event. Some expected this was due to his portal ability, which is infamous for being the most common cause of frame drops in the game. Given that the portal is uniquely shared on a global cooldown for each team, this likely isn’t the case. It’s possible that the developers felt multiple copies of his large shield might make matches stagnate without effective damage dealers – that is part of why Strange is generally considered the best tank in the game after all.

While Clone Rumble has already proven to be one of the more fun event modes released thus far, it’s also a good reflection of what abilities are the most powerful in the game’s current state.
