Review: Shadow Labyrinth
A dark twist on a classic game, as Swordsman No. 8 and PUCK enter uncharted territory in Shadow Labyrinth.
While it may look like a simple fight, there are several parts of this boss that you’ll have to keep a constant eye on. Right away, the boss will have you locked in an arena with itself and two additional enemiesattached to the ceiling, and theycannotbe damaged themselves. These extra pieces that are on the ceiling will cause some major damage if you don’t do one of two things:parryordodge.

Dodging will work fine, but the problem with this is that they’ll keep attacking, and it will be nearly constant with how often these attacks are going to come at you. However, if you parry the ads, you will put them out of commission briefly and get some opportunities to do some damage to the boss itself.
So, to do damage to the Pink G-HOST, you want to first parry the ads when they emit ared glowand rush towards you. Then, after they’re down, damage the main body of the boss. But you also want to bait the mobs to a part of the arena where the boss isn’t located. When you parry these extra portions of the boss, they will slowly fall to the ground and also block any attacks you throw out until they have fully landed on the ground. Making it somewhat difficult to hit the boss when your attacks keep bouncing off its damage-dealing ads.

The boss also has alayer of armorsurrounding it, which keeps it from taking any damage until the armor is stripped away to expose the inner layer. So you will be performing a dance of parrying and keeping the damaging portions on the outer wall out of the fight, while also stripping away the boss’s armor and dealing damage to it when it is vulnerable. When the boss has about a fifth of its health taken away, it will move into the next phase. It will also move left to right on a rail, but its main body will also move up and down as the fight progresses. If the boss moves its main body up, your normal attacks will miss, so you will need to use an upward strike to hit the boss.
This second phase is similar to the first phase, but the boss will shift the color of the attacking parts togreeninstead of blue. When the boss performs aroarto shift to the new phase, the green versions of the ads will replace the blue ones. These green versions will attack and can be parried in the same fashion as the blue variant, but when they attack, they will do so inquick succession. With three attacks landing back to back, and both attacking at the same time, that will be up to six attacks at once. While dodging was a viable option for the blue versions, parrying will be necessary when you’ve reached the green variant of the fight.

It is best to handle Phase 2 the same as Phase 1, and you will parry the incoming attacks as often as you can to disable the ads, to freely attack the boss briefly. Phase 2 of the fight won’t last very long, and the shift will be the same as the last time. The boss will roar, and the new phase will then begin.
Phase three will introduce a third new color that will attack you, yellow. There will now bethree colorsattacking you simultaneously, each with a distinct type of attack. The timing on the yellow will be slightly delayed in comparison to the others, with the windup being a bit longer than the other two colors before it does attack. Just like before, it can be parried like that of others, and if all three do manage to attack you at once, you’re able to parry all three in quick succession with the parry. This will open up the boss for a longer sequence of attacks from you, and if you’ve kept up with the damage, this will be the phase where it will be stunned to receive even more damage. When the boss’s health has a little more than a third remaining, it will perform another roar and move on to phase 4.

Phase 4 will now have a new color attack in tandem with blue, and this will bepink. The arena will also shrink and keep you in close quarters to give you a harder time parrying the blue. Pink is not like the prior iterations of attacks you’ve encountered yet. This version of the ads will attack from a distance and shootpink blastsin your direction. The good news is that these are also attacks you can parry. The bad news is that it will shootmultiple in successionand pepper the arena, while two blue ads attack at the same time.
You’ll need to be patient during this phase, and if you aren’t confident in parrying the pink bolts, you can position yourself at another part of the arena after it queues up an attack. However, this attack will still have stray bolts hit around the arena, so you’ll most likely still end up having to dodge or parry a bolt or two. This portion of the fight will be quite short, though, and the arena will go back to its initial size after the phase shifts to the final phase.

The final phase, phase 5, will now go back to striking ads and drop the pink one from the prior phase. However, pink will be replaced with orange this time, but its timing is similar to the others. This final portion of the fight now has you fighting the boss with 4 ads targeting you constantly, so you need to time your parries to survive accordingly. At this point, the boss should be close to death, and if you have access to yourGAIA, you can mitigate some damage by switching to it and deal some solid damage while you’re immune to the ads attacking you. With GAIA active, you can finish out the fight and consume the ghost in true Pac-Man fashion.
Up until this stage in the game, most bosses were quite easy to deal with, and few have gimmicks that can cause some trouble. However, the Pink G-HOST does have a unique way of fighting you as the player and forcing you to keep your eyes moving and react to anything that moves in your direction while you deal damage to the boss. If you are struggling with this boss, just stay calm and react accordingly. Save your GAIA mech for when the boss is low on HP and finish it off in a spectacular fashion.
