Monster Hunter Wilds was a massive success out the gate, selling over 8 million copiesin its first three days of release. While we love the game, not all of the attention has been positive. Many players have reported significant stuttering and performance issues, which have been traced back to the game’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) software. Thankfully, the very active modding community has come to our rescue!

The DRM Problem With Monster Hunter Wilds

Developers regularly use DRM to protect their games from piracy and unauthorized modifications. However, in the case ofMonster Hunter Wilds, the implementation of DRM caused unforeseen consequences. Players have experienced frequent stuttering, frame rate drops, and overall performance degradation, particularly during intense gameplay moments.DRM regularly checks the integrity of a game’s files, but that constant verification has caused issues for Monster Hunter Wilds.Destructoid reports that thestuttering has been particularly problematicfor those with high-end systems, suggesting that the issue is not related to hardware limitations but rather the DRM’s intrusive nature.

The Modding Community Steps In

Hours after the issue was reported, popular modder PrayDog explained the issue onNexus Mods:

Github developer build 5bae470 (Nightly 01086). Gets rid of a lot of frame-time/FPS spikes (micro-stutters) caused by the game’s anti-tamper. Fixes some other crashes caused by the game’s anti-tamper. Fixed a deadlocking issue.

Monster Hunter Wilds

The new mod bypasses the DRM’s anti-tamper checks, allowing Monster Hunter Wilds to work as intended.Immediately following the fix, players who had previously experienced stuttering issues reported smoother gameplay and fewer frame rate drops.
