How to Beat Liu Cheng’en in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
A traditional fight, pitting two masters in their combat arts against one another.
Preparing For Huang Yan
Due to her range and ability to quickly get close to you, you’ll need to prepare a bit before facing off with this boss.
You want to use any weapon that allows you to be fleet of foot for this fight. There aren’t many obvious openings for the majority of her attacks, so you’ll want to pick something that allows you to be quick and aggressive when you see an opening for a charged heavy attack. Buying time and staying nimble is what will get you through Huang Yan’s boss fight, and you should look at your weapon skill trees and find something that will work best for your playstyle. If you prefer the Dual Blades, the clash mechanic can work quite well with some of her melee attacks. A reliable and easy weapon is also the Longsword, imbued with the default Blink Kick martial skill.
Spellcasting builds can also be quite effective against Huang Yan. The One-Handed Sword does have a variant titled Astral Blade that does scale with your magic affinity if you go this route. Although you will still need to be alert due to how quickly this boss can and will get to your position, you don’t want to focus on using spells that have long casting times. The Immortal Flames and Echo of Dhutanga spells, in particular, can be quite effective in the fight.

If you are struggling with the status effects that Huang Yan uses, you may also want to use any armor that can offer resistance to Frostbite and Corruption. These may not seem overly useful right away, but having a slightly higher resistance to these is better than no resistance at all. Frostbite will briefly take half of your stamina away and is the one status that is fairly easy to work with, as long as you avoid attacking and play defensively. Going fully into a corruption resistance set of armor will be the best route, as this status will do damage over time and cause more problems overall.
Huang Yan Phase 1
During her phase 1 sequence, Huang Yan will set the tone for the entire fight.
This boss will use a few attacks for her opening attacks for the fight; however, there are three that are used the most often right away. One of these attacks will result in Huang Yan charging you as you’ve entered the arena. This attack has two variants that can be quite devastating if you aren’t prepared. After she charges at you, she will either perform a series of three kicks or perform a spinning kick that results in her stomping the ground and emitting a frost area of effect. For the third potential attack, she will use a spell that will summon corruption orbs that will spawn all around the room and track you for a few moments while she goes on the offensive.
Kick and Stomp Attack Patterns
From here, you will see the rest of her moveset that will primarily happen throughout the fight, including the introduction attacks. The majority of her attacks will be further variants of her kicks that happen at the start when you enter the arena. A set of twirling kicks will happen after Huang Yan raises her leg and begins inhaling from her pipe. These two kicks will be quick and infused with frostbite, so you need to either dodge both kicks or back away to avoid them entirely. After both kicks, she will then quickly back away to avoid any incoming damage.
In total, there are three frost stomp attacks that Huang Yan will use:

Spells and Teleport
In addition to the kick and stomp combination attacks, you also need to look out for the various spells that will be cast throughout the fight. One spell is fairly simple and does open her up for a significant amount of damage, which will be her frost breath. The boss will tap the fox’s head on her scarf, which then casts the spell in front of her in a line. She will track your location while the spell is winding up, so you will want to get close to her while she’s winding up the spell, and then dodge left or right when it is cast. From there, you can perform a charged heavy attack and obliteration as a follow-up when she’s been stunned.
It may not be considered a spell or attack, but Huang Yan will perform a teleport to you to execute her kick attacks without using their windup animations. Using lock-on will automatically follow her to where she teleports to and this will allow you to easily dodge any incoming attacks that will come your way.

As for the corruption spells that will be regularly used, you will have to keep an eye on the telegraphs she will use for each spell. Each telegraph will result in a different spell that will come out, and there are 4 total spells for these attack types.
Huang Yan’s first phase is quite varied and has a lot going on during the fight, but once you understand her telegraphs and how to avoid her attacks, it can be quite straightforward. Use weapons that you are comfortable with and stay patient. The most vulnerable moments of her moveset will occur when she is starting an attack, keep an eye out for when Huang Yan smokes from her pipe, and prepares for a kick combo. This is when you’re able to hit her with charged attacks to interrupt her or stun her.

Huang Yan Phase 2
This phase will retain her entire kit from phase 1, but adds two new moves for her to use.
At half health, Huang Yan will now move into phase 2. Here, you will witness two new attacks come into play on top of her various attacks that will make their way to you from phase 1. The first of these attacks will be when shetransformsinto a giant fox, resembling her scarf. She willhoverin the air briefly before performing aslamattack at your location, as well as follow-up attacks in this form that willchargeat your location back-to-back.
Her second attack will be in the form offour kicksthat come out in quick succession. These are easy enough to dodge, and her telegraph for this attack will be when both of her arms move to her right-hand side. She performs a slight dance movement before going in for the kicks, and if you catch it fast enough while you are close, you can interrupt it and stun her.

While phase 2 is intimidating with her new attacks, it’s easy to deal with if you have learned her moves and how to pressure her. These new moves don’t provide enough variety to make the phase overwhelming, and you’ll have no problem dodging her attacks after everything that is thrown at you in the first phase of the fight.
