Spider-Man isn’t a typical superhero; he’s a character in the Spider-Verse, which is a complex web of Spider-People in alternate universes that has converged in the latest Spider-Man movie.

There have been three takes on the character we’ve seen on the big screen: the Tom Holland-led version, Andrew Garfield’s, and Toby Maguire’s. Recently, the trio joined forces thanks to some multiversal high-jinks in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is part of the MCU. This team-up film also features villains from Sony’s Spider-Man films, like Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. While Sony now co-produces Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland with Marvel, they also teamed up to release Into The Spider-Verse in 2018 and Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.

MCU main

Starting in 2018, Sony began producing its own Spider-Verse offshoot films, starting with 2018’s Venom and its 2021 sequel, along with two of the biggest box office flops in recent memory with Morbius and Madam Web. There are two more Sony Spider-Verse films due out this year, with Venom: The Last Dance andKraven the Hunterboth slated to release this fall.

Then there’s what might be the most critically acclaimed Spider-Man film universe, the animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, while its sequel was also well received. A new entry was originally supposed to be released in March 2024, but it’s been delayed without any updates.

We’re starting off with Madam Web though, which is also set in 2002.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the film follows young Peter Parker (played by Tobey Maguire) as he develops super speed, strength, and the ability to produce webs and stick to walls after being bitten by a genetically enhanced spider.
