Learn to Guard and Counter Regularly
If you do use the Lance on hunts, you’ll want to keep the monster’s attention on you as often as possible.
As a Lance player, you’ll have access to the best defensive options in the game due to how strong the shield is at guarding from monster attacks. As long as you have the stamina, your guard is borderline impossible to break if you’re facing a monster. When picking up the weapon, you’ll want to bring some lures to keep your prey facing your way for as long as possible, which will also enable you to perform regular Charged Counters. This is something that can also be charged up and chained from every attack you can perform in the game.
A Charge Counter will give you the ability to use the Payback Thrust while also keeping you safe in the heat of battle. However, you will still take slight chip damage when you do block attacks. As long as you keep your shield up, you’ll be able to survive onslaughts from the most fearsome monsters available. If a monster makes a long jump to escape from you, you can also perform the Dash Attack to catch up to ensure you are always in its face. This is also a solid attack to use when a monster has been knocked into the ground, allowing you to drill into them and open up some extra wounds while they are recovering.
Lance Tips and Tricks
There is a price for using the safest weapon in the game.
Despite the Lance being such a safe and easy weapon to pick up, it will still be somewhat difficult to perfect what the weapon can do. The Lace as a whole doesn’t do a ton of damage. You’ll need to learn monster timing to perfect when you can counter them with your shield and even perform clashes regularly. Striking wounds with Focus Strike: Victory Thrust will allow you to force a monster to fall and let you squeeze in some extra damage. This is an extremely viable weapon at the same time, with the right choices on what elemental version you bring with you on hunts.
Some of the stronger Lance choices won’t be the ones that have the highest damage in the game. These are good options, but they might not be what helps the most in the long run. A Lance with poison, paralysis, or sleep will be the one that can help you bring out the most the weapon has to offer. Regularly stunning or keeping the monster from performing attacks will let you set up Bomb Barrels and Traps for some easy captures and kills.
This is a very easy weapon to pick up right away with a low skill ceiling, but still has a lot to offer for players at the same time. Getting used to guard and counter timing will be difficult for some players, but still, if you time it too early, you’ll be safe from incoming attacks. Overall, the Lance is very safe but enjoyable to use in hunts. The shield, paired with reliable attacks, will keep you safe in the face of overwhelming damage and aggression from monsters and is always worth a shot if you want to be the shield for your party of hunters.
