Star Warsfans are excited enough right now about the fact that the most recentStar Warsmovie,The Force Awakens, was good and that there are more installments of the franchise on the way. Some fans may not realize just how many movies Disney is planning to make in the future, and they are going to have to dig for ideas outside of the main characters at some point. It seems like ifSamuel L. Jacksonhad his way, that might involve his Jedi character Mace Windu at some point. Many would quickly point out that Windu died inRevenge of the Sith. ButSam Jacksonwould say, you’re wrong.
Jacksonis currently promoting his new movieThe Legend of Tarzan, and decided to do aTwitterQ&A as part of that. One particular fan asked him who’s idea it was to kill Mace Windu inEpisode III, andSamuel L. Jacksonhad a pretty interesting response that not only revealed who’s idea it was, but also that Windu may not be dead at all. Here is what he had to say.
“As in mostStar Warsmovies it wasGeorge Lucas' idea to kill Mace Windu. He said that he killed all of these other important characters in these other movies leading up to that. And he said the only person left to kill that would mean anything inEpisode IIIwould be me. I was trying to figure it out. ‘Really? Can’t you just like, injure me or whatever?’ In my mind, I’m not dead. Jedis can fall from incredibly high distances and not die.”
Jacksonis not wrong at all. Even going back to the original trilogy, before things got crazy in the prequels, Jedi had a history of being able to fall or leap pretty crazy distances without any sort of injury whatsoever. The actor also appeared on an episode ofEntertainment Weekly Radioon Wednesday morning, and was asked to clarify some of his thoughts on the matter, and it got pretty interesting. He reiterated his stance that Windu is alive, saying “Of course he is,” and also noted that there is “a long history of one-handedJedi.“Jacksonexplained that Windu would have likely went into hiding, much like Obi Wan did on Tatooine. Again, fairly logical within theStar Warsuniverse. He hasn’t discussed this with Disney, but has talked toLucasabout it.
“Only George [Lucas]. But George doesn’t have anything to do with it anymore. George is like, ‘I’m okay with that. You can be alive.'”
Jacksonhas previously expressed interest in reprising his role as Mace Windu, and he has some fairly solid reasoning within the confines ofStar Warslogic that lend enough credibility to the idea that his character could definitely be alive. Or, at least had been alive for a period of time that could be explored in a spin off movie at some point. We are getting a Young Han Solo movie in 2018,Ewan McGregorhas expressed interest in reprising his role as Obi Wan, so why not giveMace Windusome more screen time? There are a lot of things fans don’t like about the prequels, but most people lovedJackson’s character, so Disney would probably make fans pretty happy if they were to bring him back.
Samuel L. Jacksonis pushing 70 years old, but he hasn’t been slowing down at all. In fact, in recent years, he seems to be taking on more action heavy roles than ever, so a return toStar Warswould make total sense for him. Plus, he has a good relationship with Disney, thanks to his portrayal as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Next up for Disney on theStar Warsside of things isRogue One: A Star Wars Story, which comes out in December andEpisode VIIIis due out next year.
