In a recent article director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared that upcoming Elden Ring will bear some similarities to the Dark Souls series but will have a more open-world structure.
Elden Ring is a Souls-like but with a Vast Open-World
Not all details have been unveiled about the dark fantasy action-RPGElden Ring, but new bits of information are trickling out in various interviews. In a recent article byIGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki the director of the project shared a few details.
Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, it’s heavily based on Dark Souls.
While Elden Ring is set in a new world, the gameplay will be very familiar to those who are fans of the souls series. Miyazaki expresses that although there are some similarities, the new title will have quite a different environment which also changes the way fights play out.
However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out in the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different.
Previous FromSoftware games such asDark Soulshave more of a narrow path to follow, Elden Ring will have areas that are more open to movement and progression. Even the way you travel will be different to souls titles, as you can ride a horse and even encounter enemies while on horseback.
According to the article Miyazaki has looked a number of open-world titles for reference, but rather than drawing inspiration from one particular title, he is creating a game that draws from FromSoftware’s strengths and experiences.
Creating a new type of game is a big challenge for us. If we would add towns on top of that, it would become a bit too much, so we decided to create an open world style game focused on what we are best at.
It looks like there won’t be town areas to visit which is not something new to their franchise.Sekirohad it’s own hub area, this might be something that will be in Elden Ring. Miyazaki has already stated in a previous interview that this would be their “biggest title yet in terms of sheer volume”, so while there aren’t towns there will still be a lot to discover.
Elden Ringhas no released date announced as of yet, but pre-orders are already available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
