Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy developerEidos Montrealis facing severe layoffs at the studio, letting go 75 employees. The prolific studio says it has laid off these talented developers because they can’t relocate their talents to other projects after one of their mandates has ended.

Eidos Montreal Suffers Layoffs

“It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services,” said the Quebec-based studio onLinkedIn. “These very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and we are working to support them through this transition.” The developer has committed to delivering “other projects currently in development.”

Eidos Montreal was founded as a development studio in 2007.

This comes afterlayoffs in January 2024after reports that a new Deus Ex game was canceled by Eidos Montreal owner Embracer Group. Industry insider Jason Schreier wrote forBloombergthat the developer laid off 97 employees at the time. According to Schreier, the new Deus Ex was being developed for two years but was cancelled before it went into full production.

Eidos Montreal’s last project is the critically acclaimedMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which released in 2021. It is one of the best Marvel games you can play with a stellar storyline, excellent performances by the voice cast, and thrilling gameplay that focuses on Star-Lord’s acrobatic shooting abilities. The developer was then part of a sale to Embracer Group by Square Enix for a measly $300 million, which also included over 50 franchises, including Tomb Raider and the development studio Crystal Dynamics.

Embracer Group Holds a Lot of Companies

The Embracer Group owns many different studios, including Eidos Montreal, THQ Nordic, and even the Goat Simulator developer Coffee Stain Studios. The publisher has recently praised the release ofKingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which it helped put to market. “It is our strong belief that the game will continue to generate substantial revenues over the coming years, highlighting the exceptional quality, immersion and appeal of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II,” said Embracer Group in itsrecent financial report.

Embracer Group says that it has 10 triple-A games under development for the next three financial years. Eight are from internal studios, such as Eidos Montreal, and two are from external developers. It currently has the horror FPS Killing Floor 3 and co-op roguelike Hyper Light Breaker launching later this year. More than 5,000 developers work under Embracer Group, as of February 2025.

Hopefully, Eidos Montreal bounces back soon as it is an incredible studio that certainly has its fans. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the last entry in the sci-fi series that many praise the developer for. “The core stealth component is as exceptional as ever and even the gunplay is more of a viable option,” saidour review. “This is aided with the additional abilities to Jensen’s already capable arsenal.” The first entry Human Revolution is still regarded as the one of the best in the series, however.
