Earlier this month, Sony celebrated the fourth anniversary of itsPlayStation 5 console. Although many players have already adopted the current-gen hardware, taking advantage of improved load times and superior graphics, there are still many who are reluctant to open their wallets. To them, I say the best opportunity to become aPlayStation 5owner is now. Yes, now.

Currently, Sony is hosting its Black Friday promotion. From now until December 2nd, you’re able to find savings on hardware, software and many peripherals. However, the most important is the $75 promotion off both the basePlayStation 5 Slim as well as the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition. This brings the respective consoles down to $424 and $374, one of the best deals the console has seen in its four-year tenure. Adding to the price drop, there are many reasons why right now is the best time to get into the PlayStation 5 ecosystem if you haven’t.

The best pricing for PlayStation 5 Slim yet

For $374, the barrier of entry for PlayStation hasn’t been lower

When PlayStation 5 launched on June 04, 2025, it arrived with a hearty $499 price point. Over the years, Sony has been steadfast in maintaining that price point. Even after introducing the PlayStation 5 Slim, which historically would mean a price drop would arrive as well. Unfortunately for consumers, the PlayStation 5 Slim arrived and adopted that same $499 sticker price while the original model was phased out. The PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition also launched at $449.

With Sony now dropping the respective price points, the PlayStation 5 Slim and the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition haven’t been more affordable to consumers. During previous sales of the two consoles, Sony typically only drops the price by $50. Thus, this is the cheapest I can recall seeing both consoles from any major retailer. Unfortunately, there aren’t any discounts for the newly introduced PlayStation 5 Pro. That being said, I wouldn’t bet on any additional price drops for the remainder of the year following this promotion.

PlayStation 5’s library is well-rounded with many must-plays

Despite many cross-gen titles, the PlayStation 5 has a swath of games to play

Historically, it takes a few years for the library of a new console to be firing on all cylinders. PlayStation 5 came out swinging with the likes of the Demon’s Souls remake, Marvel’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Astro’s Playroom as well as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Of course, there were other marquee cross-gen games like Marvel’s Miles Morales. However, it took some time for there to be forward momentum as many games would proliferate on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 at launch.

Over the recent years, Sony has emphasized the importance of reintroducing tentpole PlayStation games to the hardware. That’s why games like The Last of Us Part 1 Remake and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered have proliferated.

Now, in 2024, there’s a robust library of PlayStation 5 console-exclusive games to play. This includes therecent critical hit Astro Bot. There are also the likes of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Helldivers 2, Returnal, Stellar Blade, and many remasters. Over the recent years, Sony has emphasized the importance of reintroducing tentpole PlayStation games to the hardware. That’s why games like The Last of Us Part 1 Remake and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered have proliferated. There’s no shortage of great games to be played on PlayStation 5 with so many taking advantage of the console’s fast load times via SSD storage as well as enhanced performance with 60fps support.

It’s worth noting that PlayStation’s Black Friday deals also include aforementioned games like Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, Silent Hill 2 and many other recent titles.

PlayStation Plus supports well-rounded access to classic games

With various tiers available, there’s a shockingly great library of games to play

One of the more overlooked aspects of the PlayStation 5 ecosystem is undoubtedly PlayStation Plus. Sinceintroducing the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers, Sony has been steadily adding more value to its subscription service. Most recently, PlayStation has included games like Grand Theft Auto V, Dying Light 2, and Like a Dragon: Ishin in its Extra and Premium tiers.

While these subscriptions are an additional monthly cost (starting at $10 for the essentials plan), PlayStation 5 owners can take advantage of a ton of access to great games. So, while purchasing the console alone, you won’t be without a library to tap into an enjoy over the coming holiday season.

Is 2024 the time to get into the PlayStation 5 ecosystem?

With an all-time low price, the PlayStation 5 generation is incredibly compelling to new players

Throughout the year, PlayStation has been delivering some impeccable software experiences. I’ve personally had an incredible time investing myself into rich narrative experiences and playing online with friends. However, when suggesting whether a new player should purchase a console, that $499 price point always gave me pause. It’s worth it for me, someone who works and covers the industry. However, for someone a bit more passive, $499 is a high cost of entry. That said, the lowered price during Black Friday does make it far more tangible for someone to go out and purchase the console if they’ve been holding out.
