The latest free update for the metroidvania platformer Dead Cells has been released called Break the Bank, adding a host of content including a new area to explore, enemies to challenge, weapons to master and much more.
Developer Motion Twin has released a new free update for Dead Cells called Break the Bank. The update adds a slew of content including a new optional biome to explore called The Bank. Will you manage to break the bank? Read on for all the new additions!
New Biome - The Bank
This new optional biome will have players taking on a quest to discover new riches in The Bank. It will randomly appear in your run, replacing which ever following biomes you have in your run if you decide to enter.
How to Unlock The Bank
to unlock The Bank players will have needed to reach at least the Hand of the King once. Once you’ve done this, it will start appearing the next time you cross the area Prisoner’s Quarters.
to get to The Bank players will encounter a chest, a big one that glows slightly. If you choose to enter it, you will enter The Bank, if you don’t you will lose the opportunity for that run to enter The Bank as it won’t appear again.
As previously mentioned taking the route of The Bank will actually replace whatever biomes you were supposed to go into next. For example going into The Bank after the Prisoner’s Quarters means once you leave The Bank, you will have skipped the Toxic Sewers, Promenade of the Condemned and the Dilapidated Arboretum (which is part ofThe Bad Seed DLC).
What’s New in The Bank
Risky Business
There are also a number of new additions with this update including more ways to spend that hard earn gold. Players can pick up new weapons and mutations, with an added risky effect. The Bank will actually take away one scroll of the considered ‘best’ biomes but will also offer a guaranteedCursed Chest. Motion Twin explains if for example it replaces 4 scrolls, you will gain 3 scrolls and one Cursed Chest. You will always earn the same number of scrolls that you would have earned in that replace biome.
Expect some challenging platform sequences in The Bank but with a good payout as there will be some good rewards to obtain. In addition to rewards, players can take out a loan of gold at the beginning of the level, but you will need to pay it back at the end. Exactly what happens if you don’t wasn’t revealed in the post, but Motion warns “not to spend it all…” which sounds a bit ominous.
New Enemies
Mobs from all biomes in Dead Cells will be making an appearance in The Bank. Entering The Bank from the Prisoner’s Quarters for example means you will face mobs from the Toxic Sewers, Promenade of the Condemned and Dilapidated Arboretum.
Of course, a new biome means new enemies, three in fact and they’re all money-themed. Meet theAgitated Pickpocketwho wants nothing but to grab at your gold. TheGold Gorgerlikes to collect gold and grows the more it gains, but its final form is rather dangerous. Finally, meet theGolden Kamikaze Bat, you’ve met this bat before but this one had a lot more money to drop.
New Gold-Based Weapons
Three new weapons will be at your disposal including theGold Digger, which grants gold on every hit plus ramps up the riches on critical hits, ka-ching! TheDagger of Cupiditygrants crits for a duration of 3 seconds after picking up gold. And lastly, theMoney Shooterwhich fires your gold as artillery but no gold means no ammo.
New Mutations
Joining the update are three new mutations with kiss and curse features. First up is theMidas' Blood, granting gold when you lose health.Gold Platingcauses the player to lose gold instead of health when they get hit. Lastly is theGet Rich Quick, a mutation that causes you to stack bonus gold by killing enemies when you have a speed boost, when the speed boost ends you gain the goal.
Other new additions include two new bank-related outfits and lore rooms. There are also a number of balance changes, UI graphics adjustments, Quality of Life features and bug fixes. Most notable now when you upgrade an item in quality at The Blacksmith’s Apprentice it no longer re-rolls affixes.
As for the future of Dead Cells in terms of updates, it isn’t quite over yet. Motion Twin have been doing an amazing job not only releasing premium content but additional free updates, tweaking gameplay here and there. The team shares in the post that there will be at least one more year of DLC and free updates, so they look to keep supporting Dead Cells moving onward but have already started on a new project.
Previously Motion Twin released theQueen of the Sea DLCwhich added two new biomes, a new story arc plus ending and a final boss. The last free update added a host ofcrossover contentwith your favourite indie heroes' influences includingHollow Knight’s pogo jump,Curse of the Dead Gods' machete and pistol weapons, and much more.
