The 90s loved the wordextremeabout as much as that green ghost Slimer loved sweets. Based on the 1997 spin-off cartoon of the same name, Extreme Ghostbusters: Code Ecto-1 was a 2002 release for theGame Boy Advance. The game was a platforming shooter where you take control of two new Ghostbusters, Eduardo and Kylie, out to save their friends and stop an invasion of ghosts.

Though the gameplay boils down to a mindless reach for the goal while blasting ghosts along the way, for an early 2000s release on the Game Boy Advance, this was a fun distraction for fans who wanted a portable Ghostbusters game. The enemy sprites look good, and whether it’s 2D or 3D, it’s fun just blasting away at ghosts.

Released in 1990 for theSegaGenesis, you get to choose between playing as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler. No Winston for some reason. Each character plays differently as one moves faster, one’s better at shooting, and the other has a balance of both. Instead of trying to be another adaptation of the first movie, this game tried to do its own thing.

Your goal is to explore several haunted residences—which you’re free to play in any order—and battle your way through the hauntings until you fight and capture the boss ghost at the end. With the money you make after each job, you may upgrade your gear and weapons. As a side-scrolling, platforming, shooter, this game was a blast. Great controls, solid gunplay, and the cartoony sprites still look charming to this day. The game’s deserving of a modern remaster.

Busting Ghosts as A Team

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Spirits Unleashed is also anFPSas you blast enemies with your Proton Packs and hunt them with your tech. The game even features a story that takes place after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Though the game’splot is not without its questionable hiccups, it’s still fun to see the old crew together. 2Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Wii)

The Stylized Version

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

In 2009, what was arguably the best Ghostbusters was released across multiple consoles. While the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 3 got the version most players are familiar with, another was made for theNintendo Wii. Though its story is identical to its counterpart, the campaign, art style, and gameplay were vastly different.

Instead of the realistic graphics in the HD version, the Wii version goes for a more cartoony look. Not just for the main characters, but even the enemy ghosts. As for the gameplay, using the Wii’s motion controls, you attack and wrangle ghosts with the Wii remote and use the Nunchuk to toss the trap. This version even included an option for two-player co-op. When it came to ghost hunting on the Wii, Ghostbusters: The Video Game was an enjoyable experience.

The cartoon version was also available on the PS2 and PSP, but the Wii version is arguably better.

“We Eat Gods for Breakfast!”

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered

It’s not often that amovie-licensed game gets a remaster, but if it was to be any game, it had to be this one. Set two years after the events of the second movie, you’re the Rookie, the newest member of the Ghostbusters brought aboard to test a new experimental Proton Pack. Testing turns into a full-on experience as you and the Ghostbusters are called into action.

Even after all this time, this remains the best Ghostbusters game. As a third-person action shooter, the Proton Pack is your main weapon, except now it’s been given new features for fighting and capturing ghosts. Plus, the animations and sounds do the iconic device justice. As for the story, one could argue this was the original Ghostbusters III as you investigate the secrets of the mysterious Ivo Shandor, a worshiper of Gozer, and the unseen antagonist responsible for the events of the first movie.
