Although Ubisoft did not cite a clear reason for the delay, there are already some speculations. The primary motivating factor for the game’s very first delay was optimization and general polishing. However, for the most recent delay, Ubisoft has not mentioned any specific reason apart from a “renewed focus on gameplay quality and engaging Day-1 experiences.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ new release date isMarch 20, 2025. The primary reason behind the most recent delay is still unclear. However, according to Ubisoft’s statements, the additional delay is to help give the team more time to polish the game and deliver a complete experience on day 1. Here are Ubisoft’s official statements regarding the recent delay:

“As part of the renewed focus on gameplay quality and engaging Day-1 experiences, it has been decided to provide an additional month of development to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This additional time will allow the team to better incorporate the player feedback gathered over the past three months and help create the best conditions for launch by continuing to engage closely with the increasingly positive Assassin’s Creed community. The game is now scheduled for March 20.”

Possible Reasons Behind the Delay

Based on Ubisoft’s statements, it looks like the delay is for the last-minute polishing of the game. However, there are a few additional factors (not mentioned by Ubisoft) that might have forced them to delay the upcoming Assassin’s Creed title.

February is already a stacked month. Games such asLike a Dragon: Pirate Yakuzain Hawaii,Avowed, andKingdom Come Deliverance 2are all scheduled to come out in February this year. Furthermore, February is also the release month of what is easily one of 2025’s biggest games –Monster Hunter Wilds. As such, it’s somewhat understandable why Ubisoft might want to push their game out of the busy month.

However, the delay might also be due to some technical issues that the studio has run into. There have been examples of games that have been delayed multiple times, especially close to their release date. One of the most prominent examples of this is, well, CD Projekt Red’sCyberpunk 2077. While delays do mean getting a much better day 1 experience, there are also instances where that’s not true. Cyberpunk 2077 is the perfect example of that. Hopefully, Ubisoft delaying Assassin’s Creed Shadows for the second time ends up with fans getting a better end product.
